Should you trust Omeluum in Baldur’s Gate 3?

You should trust Omeluum in Baldur’s Gate 3 when he appears, as he seems to have your best interest at heart. When you first meet Omeluum in the Myconid Colony of the Underdark in Act One, you are given a choice of whether to trust him and the potion he concocts.

Throughout the campaign, you will have many opportunities to embrace your Illithid Powers or reject them. This is one of those opportunities.

If you’ve met Nettie in the Druid’s Grove, you’ll know certain characters who offer to help don’t always have your best interests at heart, as she tried to poison your character by disguising it as a potential cure. And given that Omeluum is a Mind Flayer, our first assumption is that he will turn us into his Mind-Flaying companion.

But that’s not the case. Well, at least not intentionally and not without our consent.

Omeluum is a Mind Flayer who has escaped his Elder Brain’s control and wants to live while enjoying a ‘brain-free diet. He understands your struggles and offers a potion that may help you with your parasite.

With many of the remedies some characters try to offer, the biggest question is, should you drink Omeluum’s potion?

Should you drink Omeluum’s potion in Baldur’s Gate 3?

In short, the answer is yes, you should drink Omeluum’s potion because it won’t harm you. In saying that, drinking the potion has a side effect: the Illithid tadpole dwelling inside your mind will grow stronger.

Depending on your goals in BG3, drinking Omeluum’s potion might align with them. But it easily might not too. The easiest way to decide on whether to drink Omeluum’s potion is by asking yourself the following questions:

While beneficial because it allows the use of Illithid Powers, the parasite will continue to grow and eventually consume your character, turning them into a Mind Flayer.

For those who are enjoying the role-playing side of BG3, you might need to consider whether your character is of a race that would be accepting of these powers, or, if you’re playing as the Dark Urge, you might choose every dark and dangerous option BG3 offers, like drinking the potion.

What Happens If You Drink Omeluum’s Potion?

If you drink Omeluum’s Potion, you gain a new class action, ‘Survival Instinct,‘ which allows you to do the following:

• Infuse a creature with psionic powers.
  • When it reaches zero Hit Points, it will gain 3d4 Hit Points instead of falling unconscious. It is a pretty useful power all classes can use.

Omeluum, however, realizes his mistake of giving you the potion and proposes a solution; he will sell you the Ring of Mind-Shielding. This ring is beneficial as it stops the parasite from growing but prevents you from using its powers.

Although equipping it will prevent you from using your Illithid Powers, it is handy if you’re trying to stop the tadpole from taking over in the long run. But if you want the Illithid Powers or take the evil campaign route, you won’t need this ring unless you want to use it as an ornament.

What Happens If You Don’t Drink Omeluum’s Potion?

There isn’t an eventful outcome if you don’t drink Omeluum’s potion in BG3. The only downside is you won’t be able to trade with Omeluum nor get the ring to stunt the parasite’s growth. Essentially, you miss out on Omeluum as a vendor and the Ring of Mind-Shielding.

Either way, there’s a lot to gain from drinking the potion. It’s a win-win situation, but the initial power spike it gives might not be something you want your character to have, and that’s okay, too.

It’s a tougher choice to make than drinking from the well near the Riverside Teahouse, but it’s far from the toughest. But at least the advantages and disadvantages of drinking Omeluum’s potion are clear.
