BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Randy Coy James Holmes, a 25-year-old member of the Sureno gang from Spokane, Washington, has been sentenced to more than 20 years in federal prison.
Holmes attempted to rob an undercover ATF agent and was found guilty of Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Federal Law Enforcement Officer and Discharge of a Firearm During a Crime of Violence. Judge Thomas O. Rice handed down the sentence.
Holmes, known as "Whispers," sought to acquire a firearm for future robberies. In Nov. 2021, he met with an undercover ATF agent at a motel parking lot. Accompanied by fellow gang members, Holmes threatened the agent with a loaded gun, leading to an exchange of gunfire with both individuals injured.
The court recognized Holmes's previous felony convictions and his involvement in drug trafficking. During the hearing, the impact statements from the undercover agent, his wife, and his mother highlighted the profound effects of Holmes's actions.
U.S. Attorney Vanessa R. Waldref emphasized the dangers of felons possessing firearms and engaging in illegal activities. She commended the law enforcement officers for their bravery, professionalism and expressed gratitude for their dedication to community safety.
